40: “Cured” of Crohn’s Disease? How diet makes a difference
Does the idea of radically changing your diet feel scary, intimidating, or even… unrealistic?
If you answered yes, you’ll want to keep listening.
On this episode of the Dr. Gundry Podcast, I speak with the married couple and real-life Plant Paradox success story, Dave and Jann Hales.
After suffering from autoimmune diseases for years (Dave has Crohn’s Disease and Jann has rheumatoid arthritis) the couple has found complete relief from their symptoms — documenting their experiences on their YouTube channel, AZ Life Cooking.
On it, they share healthy recipes and product reviews, while offering support and advice to other people following The Plant Paradox.
Today, they’ll open up about the health struggles that led them to a lectin-free lifestyle, and how it has completely transformed their lives.
They’ll also share some of their favorite recipes, and offer some “insider” tips to help YOU find success on the diet.
In this episode you’ll learn:
- The “sunshine trick” for losing weight and improving your bathroom habits (2:20)
- Why Crohn’s Disease can be difficult to diagnose, and the “sneaky” signs to look out for (5:25)
- The crippling effects of rheumatoid arthritis. “I couldn’t even go get the mail out of the mailbox” (8:55)
- When you SHOULDN’T listen to your doctor. “I started to question myself and say, “Am I going crazy?” (10:45)
- How a skeptical college student cured herself of Crohn’s Disease, and proved her doctor wrong (15:15)
- How I finally convinced my oldest daughter to follow the Plant Paradox (23:35)
- How Dave and Jan’s home video became an internet sensation (25:50)
- The “foodie effect” that comes with eating the Plant Paradox way (27:50)

Great podcast!! Really enjoyed listening. Great information. Thanks Dr. Gundry
I am just a couple weeks into the Plant Paradox eating plan and am already noticing differences for the positive, but I am going to Dublin and Amsterdam for three weeks in June and if my memory serves me well they are not very plant based. Can anyone please offer me some help or suggestions as to how I can stay somewhat on track
Thank you for any advice you can offer me.
Liz
I would like to inquire if you will put together a recipe list from the “Yes” foods some time in the future? I would like to start a regimen with these…Thanks!
