The seven worst cereals you should never eat again. Are you someone that has trouble giving up cereal? If so listen up. After this episode, you’ll know exactly why I avoid it at all costs. Even so called healthy cereal options can still wreak havoc on your gut and cause weight gain. Why is cereal bad? Well, let’s start with the obvious first of all cereal is made from grains. And these grains are lectin bombs capable of destroying just about anyone’s got second, they’re almost pure carbohydrates and the more they have been processed into cereal, the more of these have been turned into simple sugars that you will absorb instantly. They are pure sugar folks. And believe it or not even now the FDA has finally agreed so cereal is terrible for your health. The FDA finally employed new criteria for foods to meet and the following of the so called Healthy cereals are not making the cut. Raisin Bran. Oh my gosh Raisin Bran is now no longer FDA approved. Believe it or not Raisin Bran has nine grams of added sugar. In addition to the sugar that these things contain. There are four grams of sugar per teaspoon. So that Raisin Bran has over two additional teaspoons of sugar. And just think about putting that two teaspoons of sugar in your mouth every time you eat raise of breath. How about Honey Nut Cheerios, that’s gotta be good for you. It’s got 12 grams of added sugar. That’s three teaspoons per serving of additional sugar. Cornflakes oh my gosh, that’s the original health food. It has 300 milligrams of sodium, and a teaspoon of added sugar. How about Honey Bunches of Oats and honey roasted? Two additional teaspoons of sugar frosted Mini Wheats. 12 grams of added sugar, life cereal, I mean life cereal come on eight grams of added sugar. But what about Special K 270 milligrams of sodium and four grams of added sugar. Well, and the FDA says now these are lethal, thank goodness, and they’re still on your supermarket shelf. Now remember, cereal is a modern invention. It was invented as a way of getting, Sanitarium patients in Battle Creek, Michigan, that was run by the Kellogg’s brothers to have a healthy alternative to breaking their overnight fast. And these well meaning individuals felt that

whole grains were one of the best ways to get people to have health in their diet, but people wouldn’t eat them. And so they devised a way to literally homogenized grains, corn or wheat and add sugar to them and make flakes that were actually advertised as the world’s first pre digested food. And that pre digestion process would make it easier for you to assimilate them. Now think about what that means. If it’s pre digested and easier to assimilate, they actually invented a food that would spike your blood sugar. And that’s exactly what they did. If you repeat a saying that’s false, long enough and loud enough, it’ll become the truth. And so marketing by these big cereal companies, actually is what convinces us that cereal is the healthy way to start your day. In fact, shortly after the Kellogg’s cornflakes company was established. Kellogg’s made a deal with the United Fruit Company maker of Chiquita bananas, that they would put a coupon for a bunch of bananas in every box of Kellogg’s cornflakes. And they paid doctors to tell you that the perfect way to start your day was a bowl of Kellogg’s cornflakes with a slice Chiquita banana on him. That’s why to this day, you still think that you should start your day with a healthy bowl of cereal and a banana. This was paid for to convince you to do this. In fact, the famous special case study that was touted as a weight loss program. The people who actually ate Special K gained more weight than the control group, but you didn’t get to hear that in the commercials. Well, okay. Many people believe that foods like oatmeal, muesli or granola could be healthy alternatives to cereal. Not There’s nothing good in oatmeal. Uh, my oldest daughter is a horse woman. And she assures me that the only purpose of oats is to fatten her horses for winter. And I assure you that the only Purpose of oats is to fat new for the winter. Sadly, most oatmeal, even the ones that say gluten free, have a molecule that cross reacts with gluten. And I see this all the time in my patients. Also, oats are one of the best ways to fatten us besides horses. muesli, I got news for you muesli is mostly oats and often with dried fruit thrown in. Now granola is also a deceptively labeled as healthy food in stores. Unfortunately, granola is filled with grains, oats, cashews, and tons of sugar. And sadly, almost all granolas sold in this country. Even several of the organic varieties are laced with Roundup, glyphosate. And so if you think having a healthy bowl of Roundup is what you want on the breakfast table, think again. Now if you like granola, make your own Christen of lectin free gourmet.com has a great green banana based recipe that’s easy to make, and it’ll give you what you’re looking for without killing you. Now, are there alternatives? Well, just because I don’t recommend eating breakfast doesn’t mean you have to stop eating breakfast foods. Just eat them much later in the day. And give your body time to fast. And if cereal is still your favorite. I’ve got some great alternatives. First of all millet or sorghum tastes very similar to oatmeal. And it contains zero lectins I’ve got a great millet porridge recipe in my plant paradox book. And if you love cream of wheat and I did growing up and you’re looking for that texture and flavor, get yourself a bag of fonio and try it out. Now there are brands like love bird that have great alternatives to Cheerios. It’s grain free cereal with no refined sugar and made with nutrient rich superfoods. But there are other breakfast alternatives besides cereals, sheep or goat yogurt is readily available in most stores now, but watch for ones that have added fruit or added flavorings like vanilla. Put your own flavorings in plain goat yogurt, plain cheap yogurt, and you’ll be well ahead of how about cutting an avocado in half putting a pasture raised or omega three egg in each hole of that avocado, put it under the broiler. Pour some olive oil, salt and pepper and it’s a great breakfast alternative. Buy foods you must avoid and the healthy alternatives. Loving the health benefits of a lectin free diet but missing some of your favorite foods. I know I’ve been there. The good news is that there are healthy delicious alternatives for just about every lectin rich food. I’ll start with the one I get asked about the most Peanut butter. Peanut Butter haven’t been one of my favorite personal foods before I got on the right path for my diet. Now you may love peanut butter and you may think it’s healthy, but as far as I consume, you can call it lectin butter because it’s made with one of the most absolute worst ingredients for your health. Peanuts. Believe it or not, peanuts are actually a bean. That’s right, a Bing not enough. And as you know, legumes are lectin bombs and peanuts are no exception. They’re incredibly high and dangerous lectins. In fact, 94% of human beings carry a preformed antibody against the peanut lectin but peanut butter is actually really easy to ditch. So swap it out for walnut butter, hazelnut butter, tahini, which is sesame seed butter, pistachio butter, or if you want the closest thing and you’re not sensitive to almonds, look for peeled almond butter. You can find it it’s on the internet. It’s in some grocery stores but look for the word peeled almond butter. Now there are other nut and seed butters out there. cashew butter is a lectin balm. sunflower seed butter is a lectin balm. Just because it has the word nut or seed doesn’t make it as safe substitute for peanut butter. Now if you want your nut butter to taste a little more P nut here, just whisk in a couple of drops of coconut aminos to boost that savory flavor. You won’t even miss or remember peanut butter once you switch. All right next up irregular or diet soda. Well regular soda has a whopping 39 grams of sugar. One can of soda increases your risk of having a heart attack by 20% if you have one Canna day. It’s addicting. As anybody knows, it makes you gain weight like crazy. I would know. Now I know what you’re thinking. Diet soda has to be healthier than regular soda, right? Wrong. Artificial sweeteners, particularly the ones found in diet soda, like a spar team and sucralose are absolutely terrible for your health. Duke University showed one packet of Splenda sucralose kills off 50% of the bacteria in your gut microbiome. They changed this bacteria into bacteria that actually promote weight gain. Plus, remember, diet soda increases your risk of developing diabetes by 67%. Why one of the problems with diet soda is you have no sugar tastebuds, you have sweet tastebuds. In the good old days, the only way you tasted sugar was if you ate fruit or honey. Your brain anticipates sugar arriving in your bloodstream after it tastes sweet. And when sugar doesn’t arrive in your bloodstream, when you use an artificial sweetener, your brain assumes you’ve been cheated and actually sends you back looking for more. That’s why when I was drinking eight Diet Cokes a day and I was I was constantly hungry and constantly eating and gaining weight because my brain was telling me to go find the stuff I was lacking. Now there’s a great alternative that I’ve made popular. It’s my healthy soda recipe. You take some San Pellegrino or other sparkling water. You take a shot, couple tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. Try to get the aged balsamic vinegar and you mix them together squeezing a fresh lime you’re going to have a fantastic fake coke that will get you through. I think it’s great fun when you’re out at a restaurant. Ask the waiter to bring you some San Pellegrino or other sparkling water and ask for the balsamic vinegar. It’s there and amaze your friends by pouring your balsamic vinegar into the San Pellegrino. You watch everybody at the table will ask to do that. And they’ll go, Oh my gosh, I had no idea how good this was. And people in the restaurant will come over and go, What are you guys doing? It’s It’s great fun.

How about rice and pasta? Well, grains are one of the most inflammatory foods out there. Because you guessed it, they’re loaded with lectins. and whole grains are even worse for you than regular grains. Grains and starch turn into sugar in your body. Now there’s some great rice alternatives. Millet, millet is a wonderful rice alternative. Sorghum not the sweetener but the grain. It has no hauls. Neither millet nor sorghum have hauls. There’s a great little millet called fornito and if you like cream of wheat fornito makes a great replacement for cream of wheat. Cauliflower rice. You can get cauliflower rice in most grocery stores now, you can get cauliflower rice from Gundry MD, and miracle rice is konjac base. And it’s a great rice alternative. Now there’s plenty of pasta alternatives. There are Shirataki noodles Gundry MD makes our own konjac Shirataki noodles, big green millet noodles are great, jovial cassava pastas are great. And I’m particularly impressed with Gundry MD sorghum spaghetti. It has that mouthfeel that you’re looking for traditional wheat based pastas, but none of the lectins and none of the guilt. Greek yogurt. Unfortunately Greek yogurt is out of the question. Greek yogurt does not come from Greece, folks. Greek yogurt is merely yogurt that’s been allowed the water to drip out so the protein content is higher. But the cow’s milk yogurt sold in this country as Greek yogurt is made from casein a one producing cow’s casein a one in most people is a very harmful protein that can seriously damage your gut. And interestingly, most people who think they’re lactose intolerant are actually intolerant. KCNA one proteins. So what if you’re just one of those people who craves yogurt for breakfast? What can you do? Well go to the regular yogurt section in your grocery store. And look for goat’s milk, yogurt, sheep’s milk, yogurt, buffalo milk, yogurt, or if you’re in the mood for a vegan option, coconut yogurt. Always look for unsweet even the vanilla yogurt which doesn’t sound like a fruit yogurt has lots of added sugar. If you want to flavor it, then get yourself some flavoring drops. Get yourself some vanilla extract. Get yourself some easy to use drops of flavoring with stevia. And you can make any flavor goat sheep or coconut yogurt you want and you won’t have any trouble finding these yogurt substitutes. They’re in almost all of our grocery stores. Trader Joe’s makes a great goat yogurt. A lot of my patients love to look for these alternatives. Beans, beans are incredibly lectin heavy. Now the good news is with beans it’s possible to reduce the lectins by pressure cooking. So if you’ve got a pressure cooker if you’ve got an instapot put it to use. If not look for eaten brand or jovial brand beans. They come in non BPA containers. jovial is an all glass eaten is in a non BPA can and they’re pressure cooked ahead of time. So the works take it away. But if you’re looking for a completely non bean alternative, look no further than pine nuts. And you can easily find pine nuts at Trader Joe’s. You can get a huge bag at Costco. Did you know that if you soak pine nuts in a liquid like water or chicken stock, they get a texture similar to beans. In fact, pine nuts cooked in a traditional chili have almost the exact same texture and beans. It’s really uncanny. And pine nuts will actually give you all these great healthy fats. And they’re really cool studies that show that pine nut consumption can actually To help you lose weight, So, substitute pine nuts whenever you got that beanie craving, and you’ll see there’s some really good benefits. The Amazing Benefits of dark chocolate. Okay, when I say eat chocolate every single day, I mean it, and you should be eating it too. Why? Well, dark chocolate is loaded with poly phenols which as you know are incredibly important for good health. And the poly phenols in chocolate may be one of the most perfect combination delivery devices of getting the right poly phenols into you in a delicious package that’s ever been discovered. In fact, numerous studies have proven the beneficial health effects of consuming dark chocolate. Take the study on the Hakuna Indians for example, the Kuna Indians are an isolated tribe, who live on the Caribbean coast of Panama. Hypertension is incredibly uncommon in this group, even among the elderly. But when Hakuna people migrate to urban environments and change their diet, their rates of high blood pressure soared. Now, notably, their traditional intake of cacao cocoa, as the beverage was very high, they actually drank more than five cups daily, of either homegrown cacao or Colombian cocoa powder, which is rich in poly phenols that are called flavonols. Now, interestingly enough, the flavonol urinary levels of the island dwelling Puna were significantly higher, and their rates of death from serious illness were significantly lower than their counterparts the same tribe, living in urban centers. There’s a very famous nitric oxide study now, nitric oxide is becoming famous as one of the main compounds that dilates our blood vessels. And I have a saying in my office, that the more flexible your blood vessels are, the longer you live, and the longer you live well. So if you want long life, lived well, you want flexible blood vessels, and nitric oxide is one of the most important compounds for getting that flexibility in blood vessels. In fact, nitric oxide the discoverer of nitric oxide was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for this discovery. Now there’s 115 day study in 16 people showed that consuming 30 grams of dark chocolate daily led to significant increases in nitric oxide levels in the blood. Wow, dark chocolate, more nitric oxide more flexibility. No wonder you’re going to live longer and better. Let there’s an additional benefit of chocolate that actually may play into this. It’s going to have a positive effect on emotions. Now, many women identify this with this immediately. There have actually been a study on the feelings of calmness. In a randomized double blind study 72 Healthy middle aged participants received a dark chocolate drink mix containing either 500 milligrams 250 milligrams or zero milligrams of poly phenols in the dark chocolate drink. And I’ll tell you how you can get rid of polyphenols and chocolate in just a second. So participants consume their assigned treatment once daily for 30 days. So once again, they all had a chocolate drink. But the level of poly phenols was varied.

Researchers didn’t know what was in each one. The participants didn’t know what was each one, and they all tasted the same. Participants were asked to record their level of calmness on both day one and at day 30. After 30 days, the group that drank the 500 milligram mix reported significantly increased feelings of calmness and contentedness compared to the other are two groups. So there was a sweet spot of 500 milligrams of poly phenols that in part of the feeling of calmness, again, nobody knew which one they were getting. And this again confirms, particularly ladies, that feeling that eating chocolate improves your mood. So dilates your blood vessels improves your mood. Fantastic. There’s also now been very good studies published by of all people, the Mars Corporation, looking at benefits to brain health and memory. And once again, in placebo controlled trials, people who got the flavonols and poly phenols in chocolate had improved memory and better BDNF levels, which actually stimulate neuron growth. And in fact, they make a supplement Based on these findings. So chocolate is so good for so many things, including heart health, brain health, and emotional health. So why not? Okay, so let’s go get some chocolate, but not so fast. The first thing you want to look for is the level of the poly phenols. Now, the best judge poly phenols in general are bitter. And as you know, one of my favorite sayings is more bitter, more better. And so the bitterness in chocolate is a fairly decent way of deciding what the poly phenol content is in the chocolate. At least 72% Cacao is where to start. Now, I actually urge you to look for 85% 90% as a really good starting point. So if you’re eating a small amount of dark chocolate every night, there may be some sugar. But that chocolate, the cacao is going to outweigh any of the sugar harm that is, but use it in moderation. Now there’s numerous bars more and more of that are coming out with sweeteners such as stevia, such as allulose. And believe it or not, there’s a stevia sweetened chocolate at Costco that are called bake believe, and Lily’s company from Santa Barbara, where I live makes multiple different bars of stevia sweetened chocolate that I personally love that I have in my refrigerator. Right now. There’s a very interesting new company called Gatsby’s that I have no relationship with that is using allulose as their sweetener for chocolate. And as you know, allulose may be the best sweetener on the market right now. It’s a true sugar that actually feeds gut bacteria. So it’s a win win. So look for these alternatives. And again, more bitter, more better as the rule. Also check out my sorghum, crisp chocolate bars. They’re loaded with prebiotics. They taste great, and they’re a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth without wrecking your health. Now, many people seek out chocolate and look for hot chocolate or cocoa powder without carefully reading the label. If you see the word Dutch chocolate, or alkali chocolate, that’s code word that all the poly phenols have been bonded and unaccessible to you. The reason it’s called Dutching is that the Dutch were the first people to make this really, really bitter flavor in chocolate and disappear by Dutching it by adding alkali to the chocolate that got rid of the bitterness and everybody thought that was the greatest thing that ever happened, except that getting rid of that bitterness bound all the poly phenols so just be careful if you see Dutch chocolate or alkaline chocolate, put it down make sure to read the label. Now, one of the better things to do with dark chocolate is to consume it with olive oil. Yeah I know sounds crazy, but a study performed at the University of Pisa in Italy found that eating both olive oil and chocolate together actually helped improve people’s cardiovascular health markers. This combo was actually far more effective than any other poly phenol stacks. So the poly phenols and olive oil and the poly phenols in dark chocolate was the one two punch that gave the best cardiovascular benefit. I know it sounds weird, but here’s how I like to do it. So I like to make a mocha milkshake using unsweetened coconut milk, coffee, olive oil, vanilla extract, and heart defense by chocolate drink powder. It’s absolutely delicious. And just a perfect way of stacking your poly phenols into this unbelievable heart healthy brain healthy mood improving drink that you can have every day.

It’s time for the audience question. This question comes from Deborah Miller regarding my recent YouTube video titled too much of these nine superfoods may lead to health problems. Hi, Dr. Gundry. Thank you so much for all you do to help us stay informed and healthy. I eat a salad every day, I add cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, radish and brussel sprouts. Is this considered too much? How much is too much of cruciferous vegetables? Well, thank you Deborah. That’s a great question. You really have to overdo it on cruciferous vegetables, literally eating them kind of for breakfast, lunch and dinner. People who use cauliflower rice every day who have broccoli every day who have brussels sprouts, a lot of them everyday definitely suppress their thyroid function. On the other hand, he’ll still have plenty of thyroid hormone, but we noticed that people’s thyroid stimulating hormone goes up when they’re eating a lot of cruciferous vegetables even though their hormone levels do not plummet. So that’s just the point. Sounds like you’re doing okay if you just do it once a day like that. And now it’s time for the review of the week. This one comes from Z T on YouTube. Dr. G’s diet has miraculously healed my mom and my aunt’s Lichen Planus a serious autoimmune disease. I consistently read different books from renowned nutritionists all the time, but no one can compete with Dr. G. May God bless this phenomenal human. Well thank you very much as et we see Lichen Planus and other autoimmune diseases, quite frankly disappear vanish. Sometimes miraculously, but there’s really nothing miraculous about it. All of these diseases are caused by leaky gut and thankfully, the steps outlined in the plant paradox and subsequent books. A give you a great key for healing leaky gut and stay tuned.
