037: Being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis changed her career… here’s how.
The topic of this episode affects 35 million Americans — so chances are, you or someone you know, could be suffering from it.
It’s an autoimmune disease that attacks your thyroid, plaguing you with painful, frustrating, and even debilitating symptoms — many of which are “invisible” to the naked eye.
I’m talking about Hashimoto’s Disease, a condition that can knock the wind out of your sails — and often take years to diagnose.
The good news is, you can fight back.
On this episode of The Dr. Gundry Podcast, I talk to Izabella Wentz, a pharmacist and author of Hashimoto’s Food Pharmacology.
After being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease at 27, Izabella began studying its root causes, and found the right diet can dramatically decrease your symptoms.
On this episode, we’ll discuss the Hashimoto’s epidemic, the plight of the female patient, and the shocking connection between Hashimoto’s Disease and Bipolar Disorder.
We’ll also discuss where thyroid meds fall short, the healing powers of going lectin-free, and the “restaurant tip” Izabella swears by.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Which “red flags” point to an underactive thyroid. “I just felt like my body was breaking itself apart.” (2:15)
- How many doctors are inadvertently damaging their female patients’ health. (5:45)
- That your symptoms are REAL. “I’ve had so many women just cry when I say, ‘You know, this is not in your head.’” (8:50)
- How crying babies can affect your thyroid. (11:10)
- Why new mothers are like candy wrappers. (13:15)
- The “backwards” mistake doctors make when it comes to diagnosing thyroid conditions. (14:20)
- The surprising lifestyle change that gave Izabella “overnight” abs — and how YOU can get them too. (19:00)
- The REAL reason why you might suffer from anxiety. (21:00)
- How cutting out “trigger foods” helped one woman kick her Hashimoto’s Disease into remission. (24:00)
- The shocking connection between untreated thyroid conditions and Bipolar Disorder. (27:45)
- The ONE thing you should say to your waiter to eat “Hashimoto’s friendly” at restaurants. (32:00)
- Whether one of Hollywood’s hottest diet trends is really worth the trouble. (43:15)

This was a great podcast. Unfortunately, the website link is incorrect. Need to add a “m”.
Hi Doctor G, my name is Mick, been listening for the past year or so, I am 36 and was born with Hirschsprung’s disease, I have lost all of my large intestine and 24 inches of my small, I was wondering if there would be any foods I should avoid or aim to eat? I have been following your lists or good and bad foods but wondered if there would be anything specific I should aim for? I am back and fourth to SoCal regularly and would love to even make an appointment? Anyways love ya work keep it up. Cheers.
Thanks for this podcast. I have Hashimoto. I am wondering though which diet to follow. My sister followed yours and lost over 100 lbs and her symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis have subsided. She preaches your diet always. ( she would be on your payroll lol). But anyway I do appreciate both you and Izabella for helping people like us. Doctors are
Not addressing what we need. And as you and Izabella stated “women are treated as tho we are crazy”
Thanks again
