117: Could THIS be the ideal way to eat?
Imagine reversing type 2 diabetes, stopping cancer in its tracks, and adding over a DECADE of healthy living to the average American’s lifespan.
Sounds almost too good to be true.
But as my guest today will explain, you can achieve all of these things with nothing more than FOOD.
Today, I’m joined by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. He’s a New York Times bestselling author, including his new book Eat for Life, and he’s an expert on nutrition and natural healing.
On today’s episode, he and I are going to discuss the ONE proven way to increase longevity, why it’s actually better to SLOW your metabolism, and whether YOU should try the keto diet.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- The one PROVEN way to increase longevity (and it’s NOT what you think) (3:45)
- Why just 2.4% of Americans are doing THIS right — and why they’re living longer and healthier lives as a result (5:00)
- How two-thirds of Americans are increasing their risk of death by 700% (9:45)
- Why your salad should never include THESE oils (13:00)
- The “anti-cancer” reason why you should STOP cooking your broccoli and start blending it instead (17:35)
- Why doing THIS right before bed can actually cause you to age faster (20:15)
- How to reduce inflammation just by cutting back on this one food (25:20)
- What the carnivore diet has in common with eating Twinkies (29:30)
- Why the keto diet may NOT be a good long-term health solution (34:45)
- The one meal you may want to skip — and the one meal you can’t do without (37:30)
- One type of vegetable you should add to EVERY salad (39:45)

Hi! I was caught off guard at the end of the Spotify podcast episode when there was a political ad. Does the Gundry podcast have a political affiliation?
It was likely Spotify’s choice to run that ad for profit, with no connection to Dr. Gundry.
Do you agree with eating raw cruciferous….?
I love my roasted broccoli and Brussels or sautéing cabbage…. So Yummy!
What are the best foods for high blood pressure and which are higest in potassium and magnesium.
Dr G I am SO GLAD to see you and Dr Fuhrman connect. I started reversing my health issues (including breast cancer) through his program BUT my (juvenile) rheumatoid arthritis escalated, and I discovered and turned to you to learn about lectins and Voila! I look forward to more podcasts with the two of you. I can’t wait until he learns of the value of olive oil! His diet was really hard to follow without it.
Listener with a passion for health. Lyme disease and after affects for five years, tinnitus, dizzy, neuropathy and severe fatigue. I work three days a week and rest and repair. Not able to get on my bike yet. This chronic state has reduced my quality of life and reduced my active life style. I am now 62 and really look forward to a better life. Standard western medicine has not helped and always suggest anti depressants which I have never considered
Great show. Confirmed some of my healthy eating habits are correct. Also pointed out some of my eating habits are wrong like eating animal protein. Not sure how to fix it since I found plant protein especially from soy to be very inflammatory. I have some recent health issues with lots of hair falling off. I increased my protein intake and that helped.
Aside from eating healthy, I hope you will also cover exercise. I eat as healthy as I can. I am very thin with good energy level and very good blood pressure. However, I was struggling with ED and my limbs were very cold even in the hot summer. I tried adjusting my diet but to no avail. I started doing more strenuous exercises and that seemed to fix my problem.
Another topic I am interested in is fertility since I believe food affects both men and women’s fertility. Some of your older audience may still be interested to help their adult children. Maybe you can try and get the YouTuber “Egg Whisperer” or someone similar on your show.
Dr. Fuhrman does not like oils, but you often state that food is just another excuse to eat more olive oil. I’ve been trying to match the one liter per week of olive oil goal mentioned in your lectures, but I’m wondering if you think eating a lot of olives is better than eating the oil with other foods.
Dear Dr. Gundry,I actually by accident stumbled upon your video that explained about Diabetes, where you had containers to demonstrate the sugar in ones cells. You also explained about intermittinent fasting to eat in an 8 hour window etc. etc.I adopted this protocol and almost over night my HBA1C blood number dropped to normal,I would like to be able to bring up this video for a very good friend of mine who is interested.I would like to mention that my PC skills are very poor as I did not learn about using the pc until I retired at 65 years old,I am now 78 years old.Thank you so much for this wonderful gift,Kindest regards,Roger.
Why didn’t he take issue when Joel Fuhrman mentioned that oils were bad for you. I thought Steve was a proponent of olive oil — yet he said nothing when fuhrman spoke about this … what’s up???
Dr Gundry… your recommendations conflict with Furman’s in regards to lectins. Help me out… I’m confused. Are you right OR is he right?
Since starting your recommended diet for better sleep (avocados and pistachios) two weeks ago, I am sleeping so much better and am enormously thankful to you!
I have been a “low-fat vegan“ for 20 years and would love to hear you discuss the huge debate between Dr. Esselstyn and McDougal who are no fat proponents (Dr. Esselstyn says that any drop of oil damages are epithelial cells) and those of you who advocate olive and CMT oil.
Iron podcast….
My recent blood work show low iron but still above the low end. Is this a cause for concern….? My doctor did prescribe me an iron supplement…… should I stop taking this??
Thanks for the Tid bits! I need a number though to know that I don’t have to worry about it….
