403: Do Peptides Really Work? Dr. Gundry Breaks Down the Science

Peptides are suddenly everywhere. From anti-aging injections and collagen powders to skincare serums and “miracle” supplements, they’ve become one of the biggest wellness trends on the internet.

But here’s the problem: most people have absolutely no idea what peptides actually are — or whether the products they’re using are helping them… or potentially harming them.

In this episode, I break down the science behind peptides in a way that actually makes sense. I explain why these tiny compounds play such a major role in how you age, recover, think, and feel — and why your body’s relationship with them changes dramatically over time.

I also share an important warning about the growing peptide craze, including what I’ve seen happen firsthand with patients who jumped on the trend too quickly.

If you’ve been curious about peptides or wondering whether they’re truly worth the hype, this episode will help you separate real science from clever marketing.

On this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why peptides have suddenly become the hottest trend in longevity— and whether they actually live up to the hype
  • The 4 completely different types of peptides most people confuse (and why that matters for your health)
  • Which peptide category I personally believe is NOT ready for everyday use
  • How aging quietly changes your body’s natural peptide production
  • The dangerous mistake many people are making with trendy online peptide products
  • What happened when several of my own patients experimented with injectable peptides
  • The 3 things a well-designed peptide supplement should actually support if you want real results
  • What peptides are really doing inside your body every single day

More information about peptides:

  • What are peptides, and what do they do in the body?

    • Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signaling molecules throughout the body. In simple terms, they help cells “communicate” with each other and send instructions related to energy production, recovery, circulation, brain function, and more. Peptides are essentially messengers that tell cells what to do, what to produce, and how to respond as you age.
  • Are peptides safe to use?

    • Not all peptides are created equal. I urge caution with many injectable and internet-sold peptide products because many have not received FDA “Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) status. Several of my own patients experienced serious negative reactions after experimenting with injectable peptides, including severe flu-like symptoms and emergency room visits. I believe that well-formulated oral peptide support supplements are a much safer and more researched approach compared to many trendy injectable options currently circulating online. That’s one reason I created Gundry MD Peptide Vitality as an oral peptide support formula focused on healthy aging, circulation, brain health, and cellular energy support — rather than relying on risky injectable trends that may lack proper safety oversight or quality control.
  • Do peptides help with weight loss?

    • Some peptides may support weight management indirectly by influencing energy production, metabolism, circulation, and cellular signaling. GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are technically peptides, which is one reason peptides have become such a major topic in the wellness world. However, peptides are not “magic” weight loss solutions. Instead, their real role is helping improve communication systems inside the body that may affect energy, recovery, stamina, and overall metabolic function.
  • What should you look for in a peptide supplement?

    • A high-quality peptide supplement should focus on three major areas:
      • Healthy circulation and oxygen delivery
      • Cellular energy production
      • Brain signaling and cognitive support
    • That’s exactly why I formulated Peptide Vitality around those three “buckets.” The formula includes ingredients like PeptiPump for circulation support, Tribasin for cellular energy, and brain-supporting compounds like Alpha GPC and CognicQ to help support focus, neuron health, and healthy aging.
  • Should everyone be taking peptides?

    • Peptides may become increasingly important as we age because the body naturally produces fewer signaling peptides over time. This decline may contribute to reduced energy, slower recovery, lower stamina, and decreased mental sharpness. However, consumers should be cautious about blindly following internet peptide trends. Instead of chasing risky injections or unregulated products, I recommend focusing on evidence-based nutritional peptide support that targets healthy aging, circulation, brain health, and cellular energy.
