110: The controversial truth about fruit
If you’ve read any of my books, you know I am no stranger to controversy.
In fact, people have been dismissing my work for years now — even as new research has validated many of my observations.
And just the other week, I stirred up a hornet’s nest of controversy when I told friend of the podcast Lewis Howes that fruit wasn’t always the healthiest choice.
Well, today I want to address my critics head-on.
On this episode of The Dr. Gundry Podcast, you’ll learn why an apple a day ISN’T actually healthy, the BEST fruits you can — and should — eat, and why a high-fruit diet ISN’T the best way to help your body heal.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why some sugary snacks might actually be BETTER sources of energy than fruit (8:15)
- Why you don’t feel full after eating a bowl of grapes — and why that’s bad news for your waistline (15:45)
- How fruit actually can make you FAT — and why that used to be a GOOD thing (17:45)
- The WORST food you can feed your kids (20:00)
- What the food pyramid gets ALL WRONG (21:30)
- What fruit can do to your cholesterol levels (even as a heart surgeon, I was shocked by what happened) (27:45)
- How fruit can actually STEAL your energy (29:15)
- Why you should buy a juicer — and then THROW OUT the juice (33:30)
- What happened to my health when I ate a raw food diet (40:30)
- My favorite type of apple (and yes, I DO eat apples) (44:30)
- The healthiest fruits to eat — and the 2 fruits you can actually eat all the time (45:50)

Dr. Gundry, you knocked the ball out of the park with this podcast! I’m recommending it to all my family and friends. I’ve been following the Plant Paradox for 2.5 years, have reversed failing kidney disease, off most meds, lost 90 pounds (back to my high school weight). At age 79, I’m feeling better than ever. Thank you for in-depth discussion and examples of why we should eat only minimal fruits in season.
Dr Gundry you are truly a great teacher, researcher and advocate for optimal health for everyone. Episode 110 was fantastic and really appreciated the episode on Alzheimer’s with Dale Bredesen. Thank you for exposing the cutting edge for everyone. You also have a great wit and candid demeanor. Thank you.

Thanks a million for making these podcasts available. Really great information, easy to follow and life-changing. I am committed to practicing what I learn, and you are making this protocol very effective. I’m on my third reading of the Longevity Paradox, taking notes and having a great time adjusting my habits. We are about the same age, so I watch you closely, hoping to also grow younger by taking your advice. You are a talented teacher, making complex medical topics comprehensible. I also think your commitment to clinical work with patients is important for me personally. Your attention to their records and lessons learned is a major confidence builder, so thanks to them as well!
