Monica Gagliano, PhD – author of the book, “Thus Spoke the Plant” – is a research associate professor of evolutionary ecology at the Centre of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Western Australia, a research affiliate at the Sydney Environment Institute at the University of Sydney and former fellow of the Australian Research Council.
She pioneered the brand-new research field of plant bioacoustics, experimentally demonstrating for the first time that plants emit their own ‘voices’ and detect and respond to the sounds of their environments. By demonstrating that learning is not the exclusive province of animals, Gagliano has ignited the discourse on plant subjectivity and their ethical and legal standing.
In collaboration with various disciplines across the Sciences and the Humanities, her research aims at expanding our perception of animals, plants and more generally Nature. In the process of learning how to do this, I have pioneered the brand-new research field of plant bioacoustics and extended the concept of cognition to plants, re-igniting the discourse on plant subjectivity, sentience and ethical standing.
