069: For better health, do a shot (of this)
Did you know olive oil is so good for you…
Many people in Spain and Italy take a shot of it every morning?
Yep, it’s true.
Olive oil — and I’m talking about extra virgin olive oil, specifically — is arguably the most nutrient-dense food you can put in your body.
Loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols, this superfood can help promote healthy cholesterol levels, regulate your blood pressure, strengthen your immune system and so much more.
In fact, it’s SO good for you, I tell my patients: The more, the merrier!
But not all olive oil is equal — and you’ll want to stay tuned to find out why.
On this episode of The Dr. Gundry Podcast, I speak with the “Olive Oil Hunter” T.J. Robinson.
As the founder of the Fresh-Pressed Olive Oil Club, T.J. imports flavorful, premium olive oil from all over the world to the United States year-round.
During this episode, we discuss the health benefits of eating olive oil, and what you should look for when selecting an olive oil.
We’ll also talk about easy and delicious ways to incorporate this “nutrient powerhouse” into your diet.
On this episode, you’ll learn:
- The seemingly benign thing that DESTROYS olive oil (Hint: It’s at most grocery stores) (11:00)
- The equivalent to winning an Oscar in the olive oil world (14:15)
- The shocking discovery UC Davis students found in 70% of store-bought olive oils (20:20)
- The truth about the olive oil “mafia” (yes, it’s real) (20:30)
- What “extra virgin” means when it comes to olive oil (21:15)
- What your nose can tell you about a quality olive oil. (25:30)
- How to set your table so you get the MOST nutrients from your food. (Hint: Italians do this out of habit.) (33:00)
- The “chef’s trick” for cooking with olive oil WITHOUT killing its nutrients (36:40)
- Why size matters when it comes to purchasing olive oil (40:00)

Hi!
I am a huge fan. I bought and read all of Dr. Gundry’s books. I am trying to live by his Lentin-Free eating plan. Yet there is one huge challenge for me. I love watermelons. It’s my only guilty pleasure and reward I have after working all day. How bad of a fruit is watermelon? What would be the optimal way to consume it?
Is there a way to incorporate watermelon into the diet and still maintain the overall positive outcome?
Any suggestion on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much!
Katia
Yes, all interesting stuff on olive oil but Dr. Gundry is promoting his olive oil for health benefits which he claims are due to the high polyphenol content of his oil that is grown in Morocco.
Isn’t it interesting that there is no mention of the pholyphenol content on the label other than it’s 30X higher than some other mysterious olive oil?
If you call the company, they can not tell you the polyphenol content either. And this is after he mentions that all his olive oil is batch tested by an independent lab. If that’s true, why can’t they tell us the polyphenol content?
So you are paying a lot of money for an unknown. If you like the taste, go for it but if you are buying it for health reasons, you are paying for a something that just might be snake-oil.
