096: They’re athletes, and they got Covid-19
Not long ago, the New York Times bestselling author and long distance runner, Charlie Engle, spoke with me about overcoming addiction, surviving incarceration… and running across the entire Sahara desert.
Clearly, this man is no stranger to adversity!
But even more recently, he and his wife, Astacianna Hatcher, joined me to talk about a different challenge:
In April, they came down with COVID-19… and the ordeal is far from over.
On this episode of The Dr. Gundry Podcast, Charlie and Astacianna share their experience with the virus — including some atypical symptoms and a mad dash to the ER.
We also discuss how this virus is very different from the flu, and what they’re doing to regain their strength and care for each other during this difficult time.
You’ll also hear their advice for coping with COVID-19, whether you’re infected yourself, or have a loved one who is.
So tune in! You might be surprised by some of the things they have to say.
On this episode, you’ll learn:
-
- How Charlie first convinced Astacianna to give him the time of day (3:17)
- The coronavirus symptoms you DON’T hear about (10:00)
- What the outside of an ER looks like during a worldwide pandemic. “It was not your typical hospital scene.” (18:00)
- The chilling moment Astacianna witnessed in the Covid-19 ward (22:00)
- The “frustrating” reason coronavirus statistics are inaccurate (33:30)
- How to regain your strength after Covid-19 (35:00)
- The “scary” side effects Covid-19 can have on your short term memory (38:30)
- Why the couple is “horrified” when they watch the news. “People are confusing politics with making good decisions.” (42:20)
- How folks are running the Boston Marathon during a worldwide pandemic (47:15)

Dr Gundry,
We now believe that C19 is a vascular disease/virus rather than a pulmonary virus. I’m understanding that any organ with a lot of tiny vessels is at risk, lungs, kidneys, etc.
What should we eat and what supplements to take to maximize vascular health to ward off C19 or mitigate the infection should it occur?
A podcast on how the virus is attacking vessel walls and what to do in advance would be great!
Thank you for your work. I’ve improved my health in many categories not the least of which is my heart disease. Side effect was losing 40# and mostly eliminated hayfever!! Thanks!
