109: What are superfoods, really?
By now, you’ve probably heard me talk a lot about superfoods — nutrient-dense foods PACKED with healthy polyphenols and antioxidants.
But it’s also a term that gets thrown at A LOT of foods these days.
So on today’s episode, I’m going to help you separate the REAL superfoods from the phonies.
Because lately, I’ve been seeing all kinds of misinformation out there — misinformation that could be keeping you from truly feeling your healthiest.
In this episode of The Dr. Gundry Podcast, I’m also going to share the BIGGEST superfood myth, the one super oil you’ve probably NEVER heard of, and why some lectin-free foods may still be on the no-no list.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why THIS supposedly “super” fruit is anything but super (3:30)
- My favorite fall fruit — and the one way you should NEVER consume it (5:00)
- How dogs may have inspired this unhealthy food trend (6:05)
- One simple, affordable replacement for chia seeds (7:45)
- Why some foods on my “Yes” list are NOT everyday foods (12:15)
- The lectin-containing superfood you’ll be shocked to hear is BACK on the menu (15:30)
- The REAL reason I tell my patients to “give fruit the boot” (18:45)
- Is spinach actually BAD for you? (23:30)
- My “measuring tape” rule for eating fish (28:20)
- How THIS underused oil can protect your gut from inflammatory particles (31:30)
- The best nut for promoting longevity — and weight loss (33:30)
- The surprising reason I don’t recommend THIS “vegetable” (even if it’s peeled and de-seeded) (36:40)

Dr Gundry! Love listening to your podcasts! This one packed full of awesomeness! Literally opened Thrive Market app and loaded cart with Italiano tomato paste, mushroom extract and more. Thanks so much, for always looking out for us! Lisa in Portland, Oregon.
Love all your podcasts they are very informational! I am wondering if you can discuss eating disorders more in depth, as a college-aged female I am surrounded by dangerous eating habits and diet fads that have triggered eating disorders in multiple of my friends. On this same note, if you have an advice on how to address this among your friends (and nudge them into getting professional help) that would be great also.
Dr Gundry… sardines packed in water or olive oil……? I would assume olive oil but not sure what quality the company uses.
ou recommend sesame seeds, but hulled or unhealed?
Dr Gundry, I appreciate your good works, educating and promoting good health. I have two questions today. 1. Can lectins leech out of foods onto other foods? For example, if a mushroom sauce also contain bits of eggplant and green beans can I simply pick out the eggplant and green beans then consume the sauce and still be relatively safe from the lectins contained in the eggplant and green beans? 2. Is it ok to consume raw organic sweet potatoes and yams, such as garnet yams or should they be cooked before consuming? Thank you for your time and consideration.
Is kombucha on the yes list? Commercial brands have sugar but it is fermented…
Thank you for your resources. I started listening to your podcast during the pandemic. I have learned so much about health and food. I have your books now. I started seeing a holistic Dr and just found out I have a candida over growth and inflammation.. makes sense why I have so much pain, anxiety, sleep deprived and feeling tired all the time. I am going to try your good plan soon.
Any recommendations for a plant based protein without lectins for a vegan?
